DESCRIPTION / DIRECTIONS:
From downtown Potsdam: Take Pierrepont Avenue (Rt.56) south, passing through Hanawa Falls. About 2 miles from the little gas/grocery store, turn right onto the Russell Turnpike Road (Rt.24). Keep going straight through Pierrepont, crossing over Rt.68, then crossing over Rt.24 (Pierrepont town barn is on your right). Glenmeal State Forest is just south of the Pierrepont town barn (on Rt. 24), about 0.6 miles from the intersection of Rt. 24 and Rt.29 - on the left side of the road there is a dirt road running up a hill. You've arrived. (see parking)
From downtown Canton: Take Park Street east, passing St. Lawrence University, continuing straight (on Rt.27) at the blinking red light. Veer left (leaving Rt.27) and drive up Waterman Hill on Rt. 29. At the Pierrepont town barn (at the big orange snow plow) turn right onto Rt.24. Glenmeal State Forest is just south of the Pierrepont town barn (on Rt.24), about 0.6 miles from the intersection of Rt.24 and Rt.29 - on the left side of the road there is a dirt road running up a hill. You've arrived. (see parking).
PARKING: Drive in to the State Forest on the access road (on the left - east side of Rt. 24) go up the hill to the turnaround and come back down and park along the right side of the access road facing Rt. 24. On Sept.22 there will be a tan Toyota Prius parked facing downhill on the access road where it meets Rt. 24. (You can also park on the shoulder of Rt. 24 near the entrance to the access road to the State Forest.). The walk/drive up the hill to the turnaround is about 3/4 mile. Please watch out for car and pedestrian traffic on this access road. Allow a little extra time to park and walk to this class.
ACCESSIBILITY: must be able to walk on uneven ground and slopes
NOTES: There are no restroom facilities. Wear appropriate shoes/coat; bring a 7X hand lens, if possible, and a notepad.
