RESEARCH INTERESTS (See
pics below)
The theme of my research program is to study what various aquatic animals do underwater and how and why they do it. I focus on two groups of animals, seals and fish. In both cases I use state-of-the-art behavioral and physiology telemetry to study these animals under natural conditions in the field.
My current seal research program has been
focusing on the development of diving
in harbor seal pups. This work takes place in the St. Lawrence
River Estuary about 3 hrs. northeast of
My current fish research program has been focusing on human impacts. When you catch a fish and release it alive, is that the end of the story? My findings say "no"? These fish have elevated cardiac output for at least six hours no matter how quickly they are angled and released. Longer angling periods and air exposure only make things worse. This may prevent fish from holding station in a stream, decrease foraging success, reduce predator avoidance, and increase nest abandonment in fish like smallmouth and largemouth bass. I am also looking at the effects of electrofishing and industrial effluents.
