RESEARCH INTERESTS
A
new area of research for me is mirror therapy. Mirror therapy was first
introduced to treat phantom limb pain. It is thought to work via cortical
remapping, a process by which sections of the somatosensory cortex are remapped
to receive sensations from other parts of the body. More recently it has been
used as a form of therapy for patients with unilateral pain in an extremity
and/or paralysis (e.g. following a stroke). We are hoping to apply this to
college students with less severe injuries (e.g. chronic pains associated with
moderate to intense exercise regimes). As a hard-core amateur athlete with
deluded dreams of grandeur, I have had my share of injuries. And sometimes
there are no fixes at all. Instead you need to manage the pain. Mirror therapy
may allow parts of your brain (e.g. somatosensory cortex) to be re-wired or
re-associated with non-painful stimuli (e.g. from your left arm if you right
arm is in pain). Heck, it sure beats taking 10 Advil a day. We will keep you
posted.

My
main research program is to study what various aquatic animals do underwater
and how and why they do it. I focus on two groups of animals, seals and fish.
In both cases I use state-of-the-art behavioral and physiology telemetry to
study these animals under natural conditions in the field. (See Publications).
