In My First
Visit to the Mohawk Reservation
(Letter to Ernesto Cardenal)

And next I see wampums in the museum
bellow the library
An eagle made of an elk horn
          And the turtle drum
       just for the ceremonies
          'cause the universe of things
              and beings
                  depends on a turtle
Not these other drums says Donna
only the turtle drum for ceremonies

And next to Phil's house: Eleazar Williams
                    lived here
-Maria Antonieta's and Luis XVI's son-
               a caricature of Phil
-a caricature of the Chief of the Mohawk reservation-
               and a color picture
in which a white jet of champagne falls over Phil -
One Mohawk Chief with a Mohawk sense of humor
And the scalping technique
                a Dutch invention
a Dutch technique against the Mohawk people (Bruce)
             the Mohawk hair like the
                          Alacalufe's
             ears from Patagonia
