Course Objectives

Students will understand the historical process by which Spain became the

democratic European nation it is today.

Students will distinguish and value key linguistic and cultural features that

structure modern Spanish society.

Students will understand and appreciate key literary, musical, and visual

works by Spanish artists.

Students will increase their awareness of diversity through the study of Spain

as a multicultural European society.

 

Class Description

The traditional reading of Spain has painted a rather romantic view of this country that, although stereotypical, still today serves Spain to attract millions of visitors. In this reading Spain is -among other things- the site of bloody bullfights and mysterious gypsies, the place where Don Quixote shakes hands with Latin lover Don Juan, where the Catholic church preserves its many colorful and intriguing rituals, where poetry (the realm of human feelings and cultural wonder) overpowers practical reality, and where Europe meets its Other, Africa, the Arab world and Latin America. In this course we will explore and challenge the actual veracity of this view on Spain and will also strive to produce a more sophisticated and contemporary reading of this modern European nation.

Each class session may consist of a combination of activities: a lecture segment, listening to songs and singing, watching a video or movie fragment, reading and discussing short stories and essays, reading of web-sites and student presentations.

 

The course will be taught in Spanish and the use of the "vosotros" form stressed at all times.

Participation

Participation means that you always do your homework on time and come very well prepared to all our sessions so that you can be ready to engage in our activities and discussions. Participation also entails that you always turn your assignments in on time, bring the books you need, and are in the classroom before the roll is called. One point off of the total will be taken per each late arrival. (05%)

 

Attendance

You may miss two (2) classes during the semester and give no explanation to the instructor. Five (5) points off the total will be taken on any absence beyond these two. (15%)

Course Assignments and Evaluation

Two critiques of films and four summaries of short stories/essays read during

this semester. (20%)

One five-pages paper plus title and bibliography page on a cultural aspect of

Spain. (20%)

One group presentation of two students on a cultural topic. The subject for

this presentation may be used for your final paper. (20%)

Five quizzes on the cultural and historical contents studied in class. The

lowest grade will be dropped. (20%)

 

Plagiarism

in the work of this course will result in failure of the class and referral to the Student Affairs division for further action.

93-100 = 4.0 78-82 = 2.5 60-67 = 1.0

88-92 = 3.5 73-77 = 2.0 below 60 = 0.0

83-87 = 3.0 68-72 = 1.5

presentation will deal with following the order in
