Time for MATH MINUTE! (provide
your favorite theme music here).
Get out your paper &
pencil, because I have a new puzzle for you!!
PUZZLE #4 How many
squares do you see? Oct. 2
– 6
This is a fun & easy one,
all you have to do is count!
I was looking at the window
below one day and I saw a lot of squares.
Do you see them?
Count the total number of
squares of all sizes in the following window
of a 3 by 3 set of squares?

Now count the number of squares
for this window of a 4 by 4 set of squares.

If you keep track of how
many squares there are of each size you will find
there is a pattern here -
right?
Hint: In the 3 by 3 window you
have 9 small squares, _?_ medium size
squares, and 1 large square.
Check out the numbers in the 4
by 4 window above. How many squares of
each size are there? (Hint: you should get 4 different sizes
of squares here!)
Can you use this pattern of
numbers to predict the answer to a 5 by 5
window without first
counting?
Now count the number of squares
in this 5 by 5 window to check your answer.

Give yourself a pat on the back
if you were correct!
BONUS PUZZLE: Use this pattern of the numbers of each
size of square to
predict the total number of
squares in a 10 by 10 window without first counting them! (- and who wants to
count them?)
