Dear Saxophonist,

Greetings and welcome to the Crane Saxophone Studio Website, a site designed for current Crane studio personnel, prospective students, and the saxophone community at-large.  Please visit the site often to check for updated information and added links.
The Saxophone Department has had a wonderful tradition here at The Crane School of Music.  Many highlights of the studio include the Crane Saxophone Ensemble and the prestigious Crane Saxophone Quartet both founded years ago by Dean Emeritus, Dr. James Stoltie.  Crane saxophone graduates have attained prestigious positions as music educators, graduate students in other heralded institutions, artist/teacher performers in higher education and studio musicians.  Crane saxophone alumni can also be found throughout every facet of the music industry.  The Crane School of Music features many outlets for saxophone performance including three concert bands, two jazz bands, the aforementioned Crane Saxophone Ensemble, student saxophone quartets and the Crane Saxophone Quartet, as well as numerous solo opportunities on Student and Area Recitals.

The school also features a Concerto Competition, a student Chamber Music Competition, and the Crane Student New Music Solo Competition.  Saxophonists have done quite well in these competitions in the past, with saxophonists Joseph Abramo, Brian Broelmann, Adam Williamson and Brianne Bixby having won the Annual Concerto Competition since my arrival in 1997.  The Pearl Mox Saxophone Quartet (juniors Nick Sowul, Patrick Muprhy, Kevin Dimmel and Bryan Bricco) won the school's Annual Chamber Music Competition in April 2002, and will be featured in several upcoming recitals and honors convocations.  Most recently, junior performance major Patrick Murphy won the 2002 Concerto Competiton, and will appear with the Crane Symphony Orchestra in 2002-2003 in a performance of Karel Husa's Elegie et Rondeau.

Numerous classical and jazz saxophonists have appeared on our campus to present recitals, masterclasses, concerts and clinics, including Sigurd Rascher, Jean-Marie Londeix, Ryo Noda, Donald Sinta, James Houlik, Steven Jordheim, Joe Lulloff, Nobuya Sugawa, John Sampen, Jim Snidero, Branford Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman and more!!  This year, John Sampen will be here to perform a Guest Artist recital, and jazz saxophonist Chris Potter will be here to present clinics during the school's Jazz Festival in the Spring.

Furthermore, the Crane Library offers wonderful resources for saxophonists, including an extensive CD, tape, and record collection, sheet music, method books, etude compilations and more.  Also, students can take advantage of the collection of recordings and music that exist in the private studio library.
