Washington State’s Sunday Liquor Sales Experiment a Success

Two years ago, Washington State approved an experimental pilot program  permitting the sale of distilled spirits in some stores on Sundays.  Now, 16 months later, the experiment is being hailed a s success.  Abolishing the state’s old “Blue Law” in a number of state-run and private stores has  increased state revenue  without any increase in alcohol-related or other problems.
                                
State Senator Margarita Prentice said that she has carefully monitored the pilot project and is convinced that further expansion  would  raise additional needed revenue without causing any increase in alcohol-related problems.

As a nurse, the senator is very sensitive to any health  or safety problems arising out of alcohol abuse.  However, she has found no statistics suggesting any increased problems.

House member Helen Sommers has similarly seen no problems as a result of the experiment and  says “I have no problem with expansion (of the program) if it serves the public.
