Alcohol Blue Laws in Connecticut
Connecticut is the only state in the northeast U.S. that has not yet abolished its Puritan-inspired Blue Law against the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sundays.
Sunday is the second busiest shopping day of the week and Connecticut alcohol retailers look on helplessly as they lose sales to surrounding states As one retailer asks in frustration, “why should the state tell us when we can and cannot be open; why shouldn’t it be our option. We should be able to cater to our customers. But we can’t.”
The state treasury of Connecticut also loses millions of dollars in tax revenue to other states. This needless loss of revenue means the state has less money to invest in education, police protection and other essential services for its residents.
