Saudi Alcohol Prohibition
Saudi police have seized over 100,000 bottles of eau-de-cologne with an expired expiration date. The methanol in cologne recently led to the deaths of over 20 people who drank it and many others were blinded. Earlier, over 130,000 bottles were confiscated.
Saudi Arabia strictly prohibits the consumption of alcohol for religious reasons. However, it is clear that Saudi efforts to impose prohibition, even though strongly enforced by both civil and religious authorities, not only fails to prevent drinking but actually creates serious problems.
