A Highly Effective Program for Alcohol and Drug Problems or Dependence
The St. Jude Program appears to be the most effective approach to alcoholism and drug problems in the world. It is conducted by the by the non-profit Baldwin Research Institute.
Evidence collected by independent research organizations has established a long-term success rate of 62% for the St. Jude Program. This compares to a success rate in the range of 0-20% for conventional programs. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has a success rate of only about 5%. Research also indicates that no treatment at all leads to a success rate of over 35% according to the U.S. federal government's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. This suggests that AA and other 12 step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are actually doing things, such as teaching powerlessness and loss of control, that make them less effective than doing nothing.
