Judges Say Prohibiting Adults Age 18-20 from Drinking Alcohol Violates South Carolina’s State Constitution

Two South Carolina judges have held that prohibiting adults under age 21 from drinking alcoholic beverages violates the South Carolina State constitution. Even if the State Court of Appeals or the State Supreme Court upholds those rulings, federal highway funding would not be in jeopardy because the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 only required states to raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol ages to 21, not the consumption of alcohol.

Other speakers examined legalities of the current drinking age, medical amnesty policies to protect health and life, motivational interviewing to reduce alcohol abuse, and innovative ways to promote healthful behaviors and reduce risky behaviors.

College Freshman Drinking Drops to Historic Low

The proportion of college students in the U.S. who consume beer has dropped 44% since 1982 and is the lowest since tracking began 41 years earlier.

Alcohol Drinking by High School Students Drops

High School students continue to drink less alcohol than in the past, CDC reports on basis of nation-wide surveys in the U.S. Over past 12 years some student drinking behaviors have dropped as much as 35%. Major declines occurred in drinking and driving and riding with a driver who had been drinking.
