Alcohol Prohibition Continues
The Alaskan village of Togiak has voted to continue its 24-year prohibition against legal alcohol. Residents of the Bristol Bay community voted 150 to 117 against repeal.
Mayor Gary Carlos said that prohibition has raised a generation of binge drinkers who guzzle alcohol to hide evidence. He said people would drink moderately and more safely if alcohol were legal. Opponents said legalizing alcohol would increase alcohol-related problems.
Although illegal, alcohol arrives daily on bush planes, snowmobiles and fishing boats. Consumers pay as much as $150 for a regular 750 milliliter bottle of whiskey that costs only $11 in Anchorage. Repeal would have destroyed this highly profitable illegal trade.
