Student Program

 

 

The MAA Seaway section is pleased to offer a full slate of events for the student program at the Fall 2008 meeting.  Student activities this fall include student talks, an interactive workshop for undergraduates on how to prepare a mathematics talk, Jeopardy, and an ice cream social.   Information on each of these events can be found below.   For additional information about any of these programming events contact Derek Habermas by e-mail at habermds at potsdam dot edu.

 

All student programming events take place on Saturday, October 18th, 2009

 

Student talks (Saturday afternoon in rooms 150, 202, 250, and 412):

The student talks will be given by graduate and undergraduate students from the Seaway section.  Topics will range from investigations of mathematical topics outside of a standard course to original research from graduate study or an REU.

What's the Story? A Workshop on Presenting Mathematics (from 1:30 - 2:30 in room 412):

Join presenters Aaron Luttman of Clarkson University and Rachel Schwell of Central Connecticut State University as they share their secrets to a successful mathematics presentation.  In this workshop, students will engage in activities designed to sharpen the skills needed to formulate a mathematical presentation.  There will be a sign-up sheet at the registration table on Saturday morning. The workshop is limited to 28 students on a first come first serve basis.

Jeopardy (from 2:30 - 3:30 in room 202):

Sign up early and sign up often -  Sign up as a team (up to 4 people) or sign up as an individual and we will find you a team.  The important thing is that you sign up!   You may sign up in advance by or at the conference.  To sign up in advance please email Ryan Gantner at rgantner at sjfc dot edu.   Jeopardy questions will be accessible to a student who has taken two semesters of calculus.

 

 

Ice Cream Social (from 3:30 - 4:00 in room 202):

Come meet, mingle, and math it up over ice cream with the other students after Jeopardy or your favorite talk.
