Fall 2008 meeting
of the
Seaway Section
of the
Mathematical Association of America
Student Program
The MAA Seaway section is pleased to
offer a full slate of events for the student program at the Fall 2008
meeting. Student activities this
fall include student talks, an interactive workshop for undergraduates on how
to prepare a mathematics talk, Jeopardy, and an ice cream social. Information on each of these
events can be found below.
For additional information about any of these programming events contact
Derek Habermas by e-mail at habermds at potsdam dot edu.
All student
programming events take place on Saturday, October 18th, 2009
Student talks (Saturday afternoon in rooms 150, 202, 250, and 412):
The student talks will be given by graduate and undergraduate
students from the Seaway section. Topics will range from investigations
of mathematical topics outside of a standard course to original research from
graduate study or an REU.

What's the Story? A Workshop on Presenting Mathematics (from 1:30 - 2:30 in room 412):
Join presenters Aaron Luttman of
Clarkson University and Rachel Schwell of Central Connecticut State University as they share their secrets to a
successful mathematics presentation.
In this workshop, students will engage in activities designed
to sharpen the skills needed to formulate a mathematical presentation. There will be a sign-up sheet at the registration table on
Saturday morning. The workshop is limited to 28 students on a
first come first serve basis.
Jeopardy (from 2:30 - 3:30 in room 202):
Sign up early and
sign up often -
Sign up as a team (up to 4 people) or sign up as an individual
and we will find you a team. The
important thing is that you sign up! You may sign up in advance by or at the
conference. To sign up in advance
please email Ryan Gantner at rgantner
at sjfc dot edu. Jeopardy questions will be
accessible to a student who has taken two semesters of calculus.
Ice Cream Social (from 3:30 - 4:00 in room 202):
Come meet, mingle,
and math it up over ice cream with the other students after Jeopardy or your
favorite talk.
