TRUMPET AT CRANE

Crane currently enrolls thirty-five trumpet students, the majority of which are undergraduate music education majors. The school staffs two full-time trumpet instructors- myself and James Madeja, as well as a part-time instructor, Mr. Evan Champion. We work closely with each student in the capacities of trumpet instruction and academic advisor.

Each trumpet student in Crane receives one private lesson per week. In addition, all students attend a weekly performance class composed of members of their respective studios. The class provides an opportunity for the students to perform and be evaluated by their peers. It also serves as a forum for trumpet ensembles, brass clinics, and the discussion of topics of a more general interest. Visiting artists performing at Crane often speak during performance class; recent guest artists include the Canadian Brass, Empire Brass, Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, Chicago Chamber Brass, Alan Vizzutti, Edward Carroll, and brass players from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.

Both trumpet studios are amply equipped with a variety of professional line horns including C, D, E-flat, and piccolo trumpets, German rotary trumpets, flugelhorns, and cornets. These instruments are assigned to students at appropriate times, as the trumpet curriculum requires that all students receive experience on the C, E-flat, and piccolo trumpets.

In addition to the many large ensembles for wind instrumentalists (symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, wind ensemble, symphonic band, concert band, jazz ensemble, jazz band), Crane provides an active chamber music program, which includes an opportunity to perform in the Crane trumpet ensemble and faculty coached brass quintets.
