Talking Points
Identify yourself :
Hello, I'm < >. I teach
< > at SUNY Potsdam, and I was
hoping to speak to < >
about his/her interest in coming to
school here.
TARGET STUDENT NOT THERE?
Machine
answered: Leave a message, because some people get suspicious. Only one
message is necessary, if you get
the machine multiple times.
Parent
answered: It's almost as good talking to the parent as to the student!
Start a
conversation. Parents are usually happy to talk about their kids.
Sibling
answered: Ask if a parent is there, & if not, offer to call back
and leave a voice
message. Siblings are notoriously
un-dependable in this regard.
TALKING POINTS for either
student or parent:
- Your specific
area: (you will only be asked to call students who have indicated an
interest
that makes you
the best one to call)
- brief
bragging about your department
- Potsdam in general
- beautiful, totally safe region
- least expensive choice (see below for money facts & figures)
- Ask: "are you (is
he/she) still considering <> as a major?"
if YES, go on with conversation about your area
if NO, ask if they have anything else in mind, and offer to get info
for them.
The Admissions office will do this, you just have to
report it back to them.
- Ask: do you have
any questions?
Offer to
send them info about anything they ask for. The Admissions office will
do it.
- Say: Admissions
Office can answer most of your questions better than I can, and you can
find them on line,
BUT if you have any problem, or can't get an answer,
or if you'd just like to talk to someone other
than an admissions counselor, CALL ME. May I give
you that number?
AFTER THE CALL: inform Admissions or
your chair that sos-and-so was reached on < date >
