Practical Recovery is a non-12-step program that uses a highly individualized, self-empowering approach to addiction treatment and recovery. “Self-empowering” means that the power to change lies within the individual rather than in another person, in a group, or in a Higher Power.

Because they are highly personalized to meet individual needs, client treatment plans are often radically different from one another. Practical Recovery’s residential length of stay is flexible. It offers mostly individual sessions, private bedrooms, full access to cell phone and laptop, and choice of therapists.  For outpatient, it offers a completely flexible schedule, totally individual sessions if requested, and choice of therapists.

Virtually all the clinical staff members hold a Ph.D. or Psy.D. and are fully licensed, and detox is available if needed. In addition, the program is fully approved by major insurance companies such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, Humana, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare.

Practical Recovery’s specialty is helping individuals who want to achieve full recovery rather than being “in recovery” for the rest of their lives. The practice currently maintains five modern facilities in Southern California with another to open soon.

Dr. Tomas Horvath, founder of Practical Recovery, is a highly respected expert on addiction treatment. He has long served as president of SMART Recovery and is past president of the Society of Addiction Psychology (a division of the American Psychological Association), the world’s largest organization of addiction psychologists.
