Increased Alcohol Availability and Violent Crime

The city of Lubbock, Texas, ended the prohibition of off-sale alcohol outlets, thus providing an opportunity to evaluate the effects of increasing the availability of alcohol as a result of this policy change.

Police records of violent crimes were compared from periods before and after the time that the policy change was implemented. Time series analysis revealed no change in either aggregated assaults or total violent crimes associated with the increased availability of alcohol.
