Young Alcopop Consumers are Safer Drinkers
Young consumers who restrict their alcohol consumption to alcopops (flavored malt beverages) engage in safer drinking practices and experience fewer alcohol-related problems than do other youth who consume the same total amount of alcohol but not limited to alcopops.
Researchers used data from the 2003 European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD) in Germany. The 5,509 subjects consisted of students age 15-17 years who had consumed alcohol within the previous seven days. Those young people whose alcohol consumption was restricted to alcopops were less likely to become intoxicated, to engage in heavy episodic (or "binge drinking"), or to experience other alcohol-related problems. This was so even among those who consumed the same total amount of absolute alcohol.
