Free Alcohol Beverages for Susquehanna University Students

Susquehanna University found that cracking down on student drinking on campus had the unintended consequence of increasing off-campus drinking problems, over which it had no control. Therefore, the university will create a new social space on campus where students age 21 or older, who wish, will be served free alcohol beverages in moderation.

A student leader explained that students are going to drink somewhere, so the idea was to pull people back on campus where their drinking would occur in a controlled, educational, and safe environment. The Dean of Student Life explains that students need to learn about being responsible.

The program is similar to that which exists at Bucknell University and Colby College, among others.
