Our Letters
The Alpha Delta Society was formed as a literary society whose first minutes were recorded in 1869. Alpha Delta Sorority was founded in NY state in 1886, the same year that Potsdam became the site of a teachers' college. Forty years later, in 1926, Alpha Delta became the social sorority of Alpha Sigma Nu, with Dr. Dwight Stevenson as the advisor. Three years later, Alpha Delta became affiliated with the statewide Alpha Delta Sorority and accepted denomination as the Kappa Chapter. Twenty-five years later, in 1959, State University laws were passed that disbanded the state affiliations of Greek houses. We chose to retain the name "Alpha Delta Kappa" despite the loss of our state-wide contacts. In 1968, Dr. Rust became our legal advisor. Since then, we have won Ice Carnival Overall four times - 1979, 1985, 1996, and 1998.
In 1832, our original house at 29 Elm Street was built. In 1951, the mortgage on that house was paid in full. Ten years later, a mortgage was taken out for additions and renovations. The year 1968 saw the second mortgage paid in full. The very next year, the house at 29 Elm Street was sold to AEP, and the Natowist family sold us our current house at 46 Elm Street. By 1982, our mortgage was paid in full but the next year, a second mortgage was taken out for renovations. In 1990, the house was rewired; in 1991, the hardwood floors were redone; and in 1992, the trim and shutters were repainted and parts of the roof were repaired.
